Between 2014 and 2016 the Baptist Union of Great Britain conducted a review of 4,500 files – the records of everyone who was or who had been an accredited Baptist minister, including files dating back to the 1940s. Any file containing information that suggested a safeguarding concern involving a minister was independently reviewed by me with recommendations made. Where immediate action was needed, the appropriate statutory authorities were informed. Where independent review suggested that cases needed further consideration, they were presented to an independent panel of safeguarding experts. Where, in the view of the panel, there was a clear case to consider removing a minister from the Baptist Union accredited list, these cases were passed to the Ministerial Recognition Committee and handled using normal ministerial disciplinary procedures.

This process resulted in statutory criminal investigations, removal of accreditation from some and new policy and procedure recommendations centering around ongoing training, information sharing and revised procedures to ensure all were safeguarded against exploitation and abuse in the future.

In July 2010 I joined the National Safeguarding Contacts Group for the Baptist Union of Great Britain, attending National meetings as an independent person, using my police experiences to support safeguarding work within the church.

I have attended Disciplinary Panels as an independent safeguarding consultant and been involved in ministerial investigations where criminal thressholds were not reached.
